Symbicort can cause increased acid in the stomach, which can be a problem if you already have severe GERD. This may be contributing to your increased breathing problems at night. Zantac and Prilosec might take a little time to work, and if the Symbicort is causing an increase in your stomach acid, it could be harder to control the GERD at night. Some inhaled corticosteroids cross the placenta in high concentrations and pose a risk. Inhaled corticosteroids are considered the first-line treatment and are most often used during pregnancy, followed by beta2-agonists. This will help your healthcare provider determine whether your symptoms are normal pregnancy-related issues or worsening asthma.
The lowest effective dose of budesonide to maintain asthma control should be used. Two studies looked at asthma in adults as well as children ages 12 years and older. The people were given Symbicort; either of the individual drugs in Symbicort, budesonide and formoterol; or a placebo . To track lung function, researchers looked at forced expiratory volume in 1 second .
In addition, consideration should be given to referring the patient to a paediatric respiratory specialist. If patients find the treatment ineffective, or exceed the highest recommended dose of Symbicort, medical attention must be sought (see section 4.2). There are no indications that your asthma contributes to either spontaneous abortion or congenital malformation of the fetus. Uncontrolled asthma reduces the oxygen content of your blood. Since the fetus gets its oxygen from your blood, this can lead to decreased oxygen in the fetal blood.
It’s best to ask your doctor prior to taking any over-the-counter medications while taking Symbicort and other medications for asthma or COPD. They can help make sure you’re taking the best treatment options for you. If you have allergies along with asthma or COPD, your doctor may prescribe antihistamine allergy drugs such as fexofenadine , cetirizine , loratadine , or allergy shots.
No increased incidence of adverse reactions has been seen following concurrent administration of the two compounds. The most common drug related adverse reactions are pharmacologically predictable side effects of β2 adrenoceptor agonist therapy, such as tremor and palpitations. These tend to be mild and usually disappear within a few days of treatment. Potential effects on bone density should be considered particularly in patients on high doses for prolonged periods that have coexisting risk factors for osteoporosis.
